The UAE confirms it intercepted 186 ballistic missiles and 812 drones amid regional tensions, showcasing its advanced multi-layered air defence system and high state of military readiness.
Abu Dhabi: The United Arab Emirates has intercepted 186 ballistic missiles and 812 drones since the start of the recent regional escalation, underscoring its heightened military readiness and advanced defence capabilities. The figures were released during an official government media briefing, where the Ministry of Defence outlined the country’s response to what it described as ongoing Iranian aggression.
Major General Staff Abdulnasser Mohammed Al Hammadi, spokesperson for the UAE Ministry of Defence, stated that the nation remains fully prepared to defend its sovereignty for as long as tensions continue. He highlighted the UAE’s sophisticated defence infrastructure, supported by advanced armament systems and strong national defence industries, which enables the country to protect its territory and residents under all circumstances.
According to the operational update, 186 ballistic missiles were launched toward the UAE since the escalation began. Of these, 172 were successfully intercepted and destroyed by air defence systems, while 13 fell into the sea before reaching land. One ballistic missile landed within UAE territory.
In addition, authorities detected 812 drones targeting the country’s airspace. Air defence forces intercepted and neutralized 755 of them, while 57 fell within the UAE. The Ministry also confirmed that eight cruise missiles were identified and destroyed before causing significant impact.
Despite the large number of aerial threats, officials said the overall damage was limited due to swift and coordinated interception efforts. The incidents resulted in three fatalities and 68 minor injuries, primarily caused by falling debris. Several civilian facilities experienced minor to moderate material damage, but authorities confirmed that no major destruction occurred from direct missile strikes.
The Ministry stressed that the UAE operates a diversified and integrated multi-layered air defence system capable of countering various types of aerial threats. This includes long-range, medium-range, and short-range interception systems that provide comprehensive protection across national airspace. Officials explained that the layered structure ensures rapid detection, tracking, and engagement of hostile targets before they can reach sensitive areas.
Addressing public concerns over loud explosions heard in several areas, Al Hammadi clarified that the sounds were the result of air defence systems intercepting ballistic missiles and UAE fighter jets engaging drones and cruise missiles mid-air. He reassured residents that these sounds reflected active defensive operations rather than successful enemy strikes.
The spokesperson noted that falling debris is a known consequence of missile interception operations. He emphasized that the reported injuries and property damage were caused by fragments from destroyed projectiles, not direct impacts on intended targets.
Al Hammadi concluded by affirming that all defensive measures were conducted in line with approved rules of engagement and strict operational safety procedures. He reiterated that the UAE Armed Forces remain on high alert and are fully capable of countering ongoing threats, while maintaining national stability and protecting civilian lives.
