FC Barcelona secured their 29th La Liga title in spectacular fashion after defeating arch-rivals Real Madrid 2-0 in a thrilling El Clasico clash at Camp Nou on Sunday. The victory gave Hansi Flick’s side an unassailable 14-point lead at the top of the table with only three matches remaining in the season.
Goals from Marcus Rashford and Ferran Torres in the first half sealed the title for Barcelona and condemned Madrid to a disappointing trophy-less campaign. The triumph also marked Barcelona’s second consecutive La Liga title, underlining their dominance in Spanish football this season.
This was only the second time in La Liga history that the championship was directly decided by the result of an El Clasico match. The first occasion dates back to 1932 when Real Madrid captured their maiden league title after drawing with Barcelona.
Rashford and Torres Shine in Front of Jubilant Fans
Barcelona entered the match knowing they only needed to avoid defeat to secure the title, but the Catalan giants showed no signs of playing cautiously. Instead, they stormed into an early lead and controlled the game from the beginning.
Marcus Rashford, currently on loan from Manchester United, opened the scoring with a stunning free kick from 20 yards out. The English forward curled the ball beautifully into the top corner, sending the 62,000 fans inside Camp Nou into celebration mode.
Soon after, Ferran Torres doubled the advantage following a clever back-heel assist from Dani Olmo. Torres burst into the penalty area before firing past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to make it 2-0 inside just 18 minutes.
The atmosphere at Camp Nou was electric as supporters celebrated the first El Clasico at the iconic stadium since its reopening.
Flick Overcomes Personal Tragedy
The title-winning night carried deep emotional significance for Barcelona coach Hansi Flick. Earlier in the day, Flick suffered the heartbreaking loss of his father but still chose to lead his team from the touchline.
After the match, an emotional Flick reflected on the moment.
“It was a tough day for me to start – my father passed away. But my team is fantastic. It is like a family,” Flick said.
“They gave everything today. I am proud of the fans. It is amazing [to win] in this stadium and in an El Clasico against Real Madrid to win La Liga.”
Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong also expressed his joy after the title victory.
“This title is more special for winning it at home against Madrid. Now we have to enjoy it with the fans,” De Jong told Movistar.
“We have been the best team in Spain. Of course, we [also] want to win the Champions League – that’s the objective.
“Next year, we will have another opportunity.”
Madrid’s Difficult Season Continues
Real Madrid arrived at the match surrounded by off-field problems. Midfielder Fede Valverde missed the game due to a head injury reportedly suffered during a training ground altercation with teammate Aurelien Tchouameni.
Madrid also struggled with injuries to several key players, including superstar Kylian Mbappe, forcing youngster Gonzalo Garcia into the starting lineup.
Despite moments of resistance, Madrid failed to recover after Barcelona’s early goals. Jude Bellingham briefly thought he had scored, but his effort was ruled out for offside. Vinicius Junior was also denied by Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia.
Fans inside the stadium mocked Vinicius Junior’s failed Ballon d’Or ambitions by tossing inflatable beach balls around the stands, adding to Madrid’s frustration on a difficult evening.
Barcelona nearly extended their lead further, but Courtois produced several important saves to deny Rashford, Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and Torres.
Barcelona remain on course to equal the legendary 100-point mark in a La Liga season and can still finish the campaign by winning every home match if they defeat Real Betis in their remaining fixture.
Meanwhile, Madrid now face major questions heading into the summer, with reports linking former coach Jose Mourinho to a potential return.
Coach Alvaro Arbeloa admitted the defeat marked the end of Madrid’s season but insisted the club would bounce back stronger.
“I feel a greater responsibility now, knowing that our season ended today. The one thing we can’t do is give up, absolutely not,” Arbeloa said.
“There are three matches left that we must go out and win. Here, we’re defending something much bigger than all of us and much bigger than our personal pride: it’s the Real Madrid crest and millions of fans.”
