Duabi, UAE: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a significantly upgraded version of its nol Pay app, with a refreshed design and powerful new features aimed at making public transport payments and nol card management faster, simpler, and smarter.
This major update is part of RTA’s push toward a unified digital ecosystem, closely aligned with Dubai’s ‘Services 360’ policy and the government’s Zero Bureaucracy Programme, streamlining its operations and reducing transaction times.

What’s New in the nol Pay App
The updated app brings a suite of new functionalities, including:
- Family Card Management: Users can now manage multiple nol cards within their account — they can apply for children’s cards, link or deactivate them, and top up each card individually.
- Automatic Top-Ups: The app supports scheduled auto top-ups for family cards. Users set the amount and time interval, and the app takes care of the rest.
- Balance & Renewal Alerts: It sends reminders when a card balance is low or when a travel pass is nearing expiry, helping users stay on top of their nol usage.
- Real-Time Top-Ups and Travel Pass Purchases: Users can instantly top up their nol cards, check their balances in real time, and even buy travel passes on the go.
- Additional In-App Services: Beyond transport, the upgraded app lets users top up their mobile phone balances directly.
Digitised nol Cards and Tap-to-Pay
One of the biggest changes is support for digitised nol cards on Samsung and Huawei devices.
- Once digitised, users can simply tap to pay on public transport or make purchases at partner retail outlets — even without opening the app.
- This leverages NFC technology for a truly contactless experience.
RTA reports that by the end of 2024, over 33,000 digital nol cards had been issued — a 460% increase year-on-year — while app downloads hit 1.5 million, up more than 150% from the previous year.
The Bigger Picture: Why This Upgrade Matters
The upgrade is part of the broader migration to Account-Based Ticketing (ABT).
- Under ABT, instead of relying purely on the physical card, user information and transactions are managed via digital accounts, making fare payment more flexible and intelligent.

While the app upgrade is a big step forward, there are a few things to watch out for:

What’s Next
RTA’s phased rollout of the nol payment system upgrade is ongoing: they have already completed around 40 percent of the digital payment system’s transformation.
The full upgrade — which includes wider adoption of ABT, more payment options, and interoperable digital systems — is expected to be completed by the end of the third quarter of 2026.
